The Combat Robot

Spring 2020

iso_edited.jpg

Overview

In Spring 2019, I designed my own 3lb combat robot to compete in an annual college competition through RoboBears, UC Berkeley's Premier Robotics Organization. I served as a vice-president of RoboBears for almost two years. This position provided me a platform to engage women in STEM majors into robotics. I also influenced students to join the club regardless of their majors and background, and all we asked was desire and curiosity within robotics and design - no minimum knowledge required. To further spread my knowledge, I created a DeCal where I participated as the co-instructor to teach students how to make their first fighting robot. I also taught micro-controller strategies to add different behaviors to the robot.
The main point of creating my own combat robot was to have more hands-on experience. I used the water- jet cutter, drill press, 3D printer, and laser cutter. However, this was stopped due to the COVID-19 spread in Spring 2020 and it will be restarted soon.

Weapon

Katzy's weapon is made of a 4130 alloy steel tube welded to four steel teeth. The weapon is allowed to rotate easily around the dead shaft since the tube is press fitted to a bearing. One of the ends of the weapon is connected to a pulley and a motor that allow the weapon to rotate up to 10,000 RPM.

The weapon is supported by two motor supports that are connected to the bottom plate and the front plates of the robot. In addition, there are two weapon stabilizers that allow the robot to flip itself back to its original position in the case of being up-side-down, which is common in combat robots.
